The Benefits of Stainless Steel Balustrades
Why stainless steel balustrades are a cut above the rest.
Stainless steel is a high quality metal, however, many of its benefits are underappreciated.
Stainless Steel Doesn’t Just Resist Stains
Stainless steel resists damage from obvious sources, such as contact from people, but there are other benefits which you might not be aware of:
- Defends against corrosion. Over time, we expect things to become worn and weathered. Stainless steel however, is more resilient than your average metal and can resist corrosive elements such as acid rain far longer than most metals.
- Bacterial resistance. The coatings applied to stainless steel after manufacturing decrease the ability for bacteria and other micro-organisms to attach to the metals. As a result, stainless steel balustrades in places like hospitals can reduce the chances of harmful bacteria being spread.
- Self-healing. Stainless steel is covered in a thin layer of chromium, a substance that reacts to oxygen in air and water. If the steel is damaged by a harsh chemical or an object scratching it, the chromium oxidises the area, returning it to its former glory. This is the secret the stainless steels long life.
Due to the qualities that make it so resistant to damage – the combinations of nickel and other substances added during the manufacturing process – stainless steel also has an incredibly high strength-to-weight ratio. This allows for a high load bearing with decreased size. While this is great for cost-effectivity, it also improves the safety of balustrades, as smaller-size railings are easier to grip.
Low Cost Maintenance
Thanks to the combined effort of the stainless steels resistant qualities and its reduced size, the cost of maintenance of this type of balustrade is substantially lower than other types. Rarely does it require replacing or touching up, as it not only does it fight against damaging elements, but it’s resistances ensure its appearance never changes; allowing it to appear almost brand new for many years.
